Welcome to the Heuchera Guide!

In this blog you will learn what a Heuchera is, how to care for it, and what varieties we sell.

All about Heucheras

Heuchera, also known as coral bells, is a genus of evergreen perennial flowering plants that belong to the Saxifragaceae family. Native to North America, Heuchera can be found in a variety of climates and habitats, from rocky slopes to woodland edges. They are highly valued for their colorful foliage and attractive flowers, which appear in shades of white, pink, and purple.

Heuchera plants generally have attractive foliage that can vary in shape and color. The leaves may be rounded, or deeply lobed with scalloped or ruffled margins. Colors of the foliage can range from light green to dark purple, with silver-gray or bronze tints. The foliage can be either evergreen or semi-evergreen, depending on the variety.

Heuchera plants can reach a height of 8-18 inches, depending on the species, and they typically grow in clumps with a spread of 12-18 inches. The flowers typically appear in May or June and have a bell-like shape. They come in shades of white, pink, or purple and attract butterflies and hummingbirds.

Care Guide

Here’s a guide on growing and caring for Heuchera plants:

  1. Light: Heuchera plants prefer partial shade to full sun, but too much sun can cause their leaves to scorch. In hot climates, they may do better in areas with morning sun and afternoon shade.
  2. Soil: Heuchera plants prefer well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. If your soil is heavy or clay-like, amend it with compost or well-rotted manure before planting.
  3. Water: Prefer evenly moist soil, but they do not like to sit in standing water. Water them deeply once a week, and more often during hot, dry weather.
  4. Fertilizer: Do not need a lot of fertilizer, but they will benefit from a light application of a balanced fertilizer in the spring. Avoid fertilizing them in the summer, as this can cause them to produce weaker growth.
  5. Pruning: Heuchera plants do not require regular pruning, but you can remove any dead or damaged leaves to keep them looking tidy. You can also cut back the flower stalks after they have finished blooming.
  6. Propagation: Can be propagated by division in the spring or fall. Simply dig up the plant, separate the clumps, and replant them in a new location.
  7. Pests and diseases: Heucheras are relatively pest and disease-resistant, but they can be susceptible to fungal diseases in wet weather. To prevent this, avoid overhead watering and make sure the soil drains well.
  8. Varieties: There are many different varieties of Heuchera plants, each with its own unique foliage color and flower color. Some popular varieties include ‘Caramel’, ‘Lime Rickey’, ‘Obsidian’, and ‘Palace Purple
